Rob Damiani – Don Broco – Singer : Good thanks, a little bit ill, i’ve got a little cough. Yeah at the start of tour we all got really cold… yeah I don’t think we realized we weren’t quite prepared to how cold Spain would be… we think ‘oh Spain! sunshine! beautiful!’ and we got there and it’s like january so… yeah we didn’t bring enough warm clothes with us. so we’re feeling a little bit sorry for ourselves, but apart from that the tour’s been pretty great.

M : The tour is doing great, since the beginning ?

R : It’s been strange some of the shows, without Simon on stage because Simon had the flu. Unfortunately we had to cancel our show in Poland cuz he was just feeling.. He couldn’t even hold a guitar, he couldn’t even walk, but the other show we had him in the backstage, and he’s been sort of playing in a little room and we would be on stage while he was in a little room backstage playing. It’s always a little bit strange on stage cuz I’m used to having him next to me but the crowds have just been amazing, they’ve helped us through the weirdness by gibing us so much energy pulling us through the shows, it’s really cool.

M : Okay cool! So we saw yesterday that you released HALF MAN HALF GOD, so just right on time for the show tonight! Will you play it tonight ?

R : Yeah it’s gonna be the first time we’ve ever played it tonight, so we’re excited to give it its big debut here in Paris would be very cool.

M : So the song is very fast, dynamic and there are some screams too, so will it represent the next album ? because I assume it’s for the next album.

R : Yeah! it’s hard to know really. I mean this is just one song we wrote, we haven’t really started getting into the album. We wrote this song on the last tour we did in america, we were with Mike Shinoda in the States for about 6-7 weeks and we had a few days off and we just thought « we’d love to play some new songs on this tour. So we just kinda tried to write and we don’t usually write on the road, we find it quite annoying because you’re in a little small bus and it’s nice when you’ve got a bit more freedom and think through an idea, let it lie for a bit and come back to it. We like to be a bit more leisurely but we thought we’d try writing this new song, get it recorded in time for the tour and yeah we’re excited to play it’s gonna be fun. It’s always fun for us refreshing up the set and getting new things in so it’s definitely the start of new material for an album. Who knows where the album is gonna go yet but yeah this would definitely be on there.

M : Ok cool. So do you have any fun facts to share about the making of this song ?

R : I mean yeah, it was very kind of quick. I think it kind of came together in two or three days on the bus and yeah it started not sounding like anything it sounds like now. It started like sounding almost like Earth Song by Michael Jackson. When we came up with the chorus we were like « wow this sounds too much like MJ we gonna get sued by the jackson estate! BUt any of our songs, once they’ve gotten the full Don Broco treatment the end up sounding nothing the original idea but who knows! It was just something we just wrote in the bus and we were jamming it kind of shouting along just energetic.. Whenever we’re on tour we end up writing kind of quite energetic fun songs because that’s what you want to be doing, because that’s why you’re thinking about playing all the time… So yeah it definitely didn’t sound anything like it did originally but then once we got the arrangement of the verse chorus dynamic we just wanted to kinda heart it as possible.

M : So what do you except from your French fans tonight ? Because we saw that the show has been completely sold out for a long time!

R : Yeah! it’s gonna be really cool like we played paris last may i think

M : As guest ?

R : No doing our own show

M : We missed it! I remember when you were opening for Bring me the Horizon

R : Yeah that must’ve been two or three years ago…

M : In July last year you were at Lollapalooza festival Paris !

R : Yes we did Lollapalooza, that was really fun. And we were here in May doing a headline show at the Nouveau Casino. And that was a really fun show, it was one of my favourite shows of the tour. Everytime we go to France, especially Paris, it’s the best so…

M : So have you already planned to come back for a festival ?

R : We ight be coming back, we haven’t got any plans yet. We’re hoping this summer to be able to have a little bit of time off and write some new songs, start writing the next album… We might be coming back. We kinda just want to lock ourselves away and come up with some new stuff. We’ve been touring pretty much non-stop for the last year so it’d be nice to have a bit of time off.

M : Speaking of technology habit, what’s your favourite song from the album to play live ? If you have one

R : It’s a tough question because it changes really, it depends. Pretty is always fun to play, pretty and everybody are so high energy, the crowd goes wild, and they’re pretty fun songs. But then there are some new songs that we started playing that are fun to do… Tightrope, we’ve been trying that in the set a little bit and got to be you is really fun. So I think we’re going to play got to be you tonight but we don’t play it all the time but we’re gonna give it a go tonight. It sounds a little bit different from the set so it’s a nice pace changer, you know when you got so much energy stuff. Most of technology is pretty loud and fast and then you got something a little bit more relaxing. It’s kinda nice to bring things down so yeah that’s a good one.

M : Are you gonna play old songs for the fans ?

R : Yeah! we always try to do a little bit of mix so include some of the other albums as well for everyone who’s been with us throughout the years so yeah mix it up! But i mean a lot of tehcnology this time because it’s the first proper time we’ve done a full tour with technology so that’d be cool.

M : We’re excited to see that tonight! On Error404 we are speaking about video games, movies and tv shows, and we want to know you a bit more. So could you recommend us on artists that you’re listening atm ?

R : I’ve been listening to the new Bring me the Horizon record which is awesome, though I think everybody knows about that already. But that’s wicked and it came out recently so i’m loving that. There’s a hiphop collective called Brockhampton, from the states, who I’ve been listening a lot to recently. they’re really fresh, really exciting. There’s so many members, like 20 members or somehting. And not all of them rap, some of them producing, and having various functions in the group which is really cool. Liek they’ve got their photographies down and all of their visuals as well. So it’s a creative collective but they’ve got so many people who do sing and rap as well they just sound so fresh. There’s a lot of different voices, different textures and flavors going on within the song, which is always something exciting to look for within three or four minute songs so yeah brockhampton.

M : Is that a thing you could think about ? Making a collective with many rock musicians ?

R : Yeah that’d be fun, that’s be different, yeah!

M : So which people do you pick for this band ?

R : You’d want all your friends in here. So definitely the Bring me the Horizon guys, I’d love to bring all our buddies growing up within the uk and the uk scene, You me at six, get those guys down, um my favourite band Biffy Clyro… I love the new Tøp album, this is sick as well so these guys, Deaf tones, why not Fall out Boy and get them in there cuz they are into collaborations as well. They collaborated with the everytime i die guys, why not issues, who else could we bring in… Brendon Urie definitely! You gotta have some Panic! at the Disco.

M : Do you have a collaboration in mind for the next album, maybe ?

R : We definitely got a few people that I did mention in that list, but I don’t want to ruin anything. We got some works already actually. We’re sorting out and I don’t want to give away too much because I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but we’re bringing in a couple of friends for one song. We’ve written this song and we just thought we’ve got a few people we thought would sound great so we’re gonna get them involved and they’re gonna record their parts soon to it and that’s going to be a fun party song. When that’s ready, I think you’re going to hear all these different voices in there so it’s going to be a collaborative work.

M : Do you have a favourite movie ?

R : So hard, I love movies so pinning one movie is so tough but I think there had to be one favourite movie of all time it’d have to be the dark night like the feeling it gave me when i saw it for the first time in the IMAX. I’m a huge Batman fan anyway, huge comic book guy but i love my kind of gritty thriller crime films too, so for me the dark knight was this perfect blend of fantastical superhero movie yet set in this real sort of gangster real epic world. I love gangster movies as well and it’s got a real feel and obviously there’s no better villain than Heath Ledger’s Joker, he’s still top of the tree for me. Any real good movie for me. You don’t need a bad guy and a good guy but you know a protagonist and an antagonist and the clash between them is just so good so definitely that. I just love anything by Christopher Nolan. He’s just one of my fav directors, he can’t do any wrong, Momento, Inception… I just love everything he’s done.

M : And to finish, maybe one video game ?

R : Um I think if it had to be of all time, it’d be Ocarina of Time bc it’s just so classic innit. it held such a special plac ein my childhood growing up. It was this incredible world and the first time I played it on my game boy as well when I was little, to see that 3D world visualized for the first time and that which is really good. All of the zelda games have been good up until now. I don’t have much time to play now but new games… I haven’t played it loads but Red Dead Redemption 2 is fucking sick. I mean I love the wild west and cowboys and anything like that.

M : Well thank you very much for your answers!

Maximilien – Error404 : Bonjour Rob, comment vas-tu ?

Rob Domiani (chant-Don Broco) : Bien merci, je suis juste un peu malade, j’ai un petit rhume. Au début de la tournée on est tous tombé malade, et je crois pas qu’on se soit rendu compte à quel point il ferait froid en Espagne… On s’est dit : « ah l’Espagne ! il fait beau et il y a du soleil ! » mais on y était en janvier du coup on a pas amené assez de vêtements chauds avec nous. Du coup on ne pouvait s’en prendre qu’à nous même. Mais sinon à part ça la tournée se passe super bien.

Max : Donc tout se passe bien depuis le début de la tournée ?

Rob : Tout se passe bien, oui. Ça a été un peu bizarre de ne pas avoir Simon sur scène pendant certains concerts parce qu’il avait la grippe. Malheureusement on a dû annuler notre date en Pologne parce qu’il était tellement malade qu’il ne pouvait même pas tenir une guitare, et encore moins marcher. Pour d’autres concerts il jouait dans une petite salle en coulisse pendant que nous étions sur scène. C’est toujours un peu bizarre sur scène parce que j’ai l’habitude qu’il soit à côté de moi, mais le public a été génial à chaque fois, il nous a aidé à surmonter l’étrangeté de la situation en nous donnant tellement d’énergie qui nous a guidé pendant le concert, c’est génial.

Max : On a vu hier que vous avez sorti HALF MAN HALF GOD, pile à temps pour le concert de ce soir! Allez-vous jouer cette chanson ce soir ?

Rob : Oui absolument, ce sera la première fois qu’on la joue ce soir, du coup on est impatient de l’introduire ce soir à Paris, ça va être super cool !

Max : Donc cette chanson est très rapide, dynamique et on peut y entendre des cris aussi. Est-ce que ça va représenter le prochain album ? Parce que j’en déduit qu’elle ira sur le prochain album.

Rob : C’est difficile de le dire pour le moment. C’était juste une chanson qu’on a écrit comme ça, on ne s’est pas encore lancé dans l’écriture de l’album. On a écrit cette chanson pendant la dernière tournée qu’on a fait aux Etats-Unis, où on était avec Mike Shinoda pendant à peu près six ou sept semaines, et pendant nos jours de repos on s’est dit qu’on adorerait jouer de nouvelles chansons pour la prochaine tournée. Du coup on a juste essayé d’écrire alors qu’habituellement on n’écrit pas sur la route parce qu’on trouve ça un peu énervant d’être dans un petit bus. C’est plus sympa quand on a plus de liberté pour réfléchir à une idée, de la laisser reposer pendant quelques temps puis de revenir dessus. On aime bien être tranquille pour écrire mais pour cette chanson on a décidé d’essayer de l’écrire et de l’enregistrer à temps pour la tournée. On est super excité à l’idée de la jouer et ça va être sympa. C’est toujours rafraichissant pour nous de varier un peu le set et d’y ajouter des nouveautés, donc c’est définitivement le début d’un nouveau contenu pour un album. Qui sait où l’album va mener pour le moment mais la chanson y serait totalement.

Max : Ah, génial ! Est-ce que tu as des anecdotes sur le making-of de cette chanson ?

Rob : Um… oui, tout s’est fait rapidement. Je pense que ça s’est assemblé en deux ou trois heures dans le bus et au départ ça ne ressemblait pas du tout à ce que l’on peut entendre sur la version finale. Au début c’était presque comme Earth Song de Michael Jackson, et quand on a élaboré le refrain on s’est dit : « ça ressemble trop à Michael Jackson, on va se faire poursuivre par la famille Jackson ! » Mais toutes nos chansons, après avoir reçu le traitement complet à la Don Broco, finissent par être totalement différentes des idées originales ! C’était juste quelque chose qu’on a écrit dans le bus et sur laquelle on jouait et on criait… À chaque fois qu’on est en tournée on a tendance à écrire des chansons amusantes et pleines d’énergie parce que l’état dans lequel tu veux être, parce que tu penses tout le temps à jouer. Donc oui le produit fini ne ressemble pas du tout à l’idée originale mais une fois que l’arrangement à été trouvé on a essayé de la diriger vers ce à quoi elle ressemble aujourd’hui.

Max : Très bien ! Du coup qu’est-ce que vous attendez de vos fans français ce soir ? Parce que le concert est complet depuis longtemps !

Rob : Ouais ça va être génial ! Je crois que la dernière fois qu’on a joué ici était en mai dernier.

Max : En tant qu’invités ?

Rob : Non, on jouait notre propre concert !

Max : Ah ! on a manqué ça ! Je me souviens quand vous étiez la première partie de Bring me the Horizon, et au festival du Lollapalooza.

Rob : Oui ça devait être il y a deux ou trois ans, et le Lollapalooza était super sympa. Non la dernière fois qu’on est venu à Paris, c’était pour un concert en tête d’affiche au Nouveau Casino. Ce concert est d’ailleurs l’un de mes préférés de la tournée. De toute façon à chaque fois qu’on vient à Paris c’est absolument génial.

Max : Avez-vous déjà prévu de revenir pour un festival ?

Rob : On va peut-être revenir, mais on a rien de prévu pour l’instant. On espère avoir du temps libre cet été pour se reposer et pour écrire de nouvelles chansons et préparer le nouvel album, mais on va sûrement revenir. On veut juste s’isoler du reste du monde pendant quelques temps pour préparer de nouveaux sons, parce que ça fait un an qu’on est sur la route sans prendre de vacances, du coup un peu de repos est le bienvenu.

Max : Oui c’est tout à fait compréhensible. En parlant de nouvelles technologies, quelle chanson de l’album préférez-vous jouer sur scène ?

Rob : C’est une question difficile parce que ça change tout le temps, et ça dépend des circonstances. C’est toujours super amusant de jouer Pretty et Everybody parce qu’elles sont pleines d’énergies et la foule est en délire. Mais après il y a des nouvelles chansons qu’on a commencé à jouer et sur lesquelles on prend beaucoup de plaisir… Il y a Tightrope et Got to be you qu’on essaye d’ajouter au set petit à petit. Je pense qu’on va jouer Got to be you ce soir mais on ne la joue pas tout le temps, on va voir ce que ça donne ce soir. Elle sonne un peu différemment des autres chansons sur la setlist et elle change le rythme du concert, ça calme un peu de toutes les chansons qui bougent. La plupart des chansons de Technology sont plutôt bruyantes et rythmées comparées à Got to be you qui est plus relaxante, c’est plutôt sympa de ralentir un peu le rythme et c’est une bonne chanson.

Max : Est-ce que vous allez jouer de vieilles chansons pour vos fans ce soir ?

Rob: Bien sûr ! On essaye toujours de mélanger un peu les chansons et d’incorporer les anciens albums pour les fans qui nous ont suivi au fil des années. Par contre il y aura beaucoup de chansons de Technology cette fois parce que c’est la première fois qu’on fait une tournée consacrée à l’album.

Max : On est impatient de voir ça ce soir ! Sur Error404 on parle de jeux vidéo, films et séries, et on aimerait te connaître un peu plus, du coup as-tu des artistes que tu écoutes en ce moment à nous conseiller ?

Rob : En ce moment j’écoute le dernier album de Bring me the Horizon qui est absolument génial, mais je pense que tout le monde les connait déjà, mais il est sorti récemment et j’adore. Sinon il y a un collectif de hip-hop qui s’appelle Brockhampton et qui vient des Etats-Unis et que j’écoute beaucoup ces derniers temps. Ils sont très rafraîchissants et ils sont beaucoup de membres, une vingtaine je crois. Ils ne font pas tous du rap, certains produisent, et chacun a une fonction qui varie dans le groupe, ce qui est vraiment bien. Par exemple ils ont un photographe officiel et tous leurs visuels sont gérés par eux. Donc c’est un collectif créatif mais avec beaucoup de gens qui chantent et qui rappent également et le son est tellement frais et nouveau, avec beaucoup de voix différentes, des textures qui varient dans leurs chansons, ce qui est toujours quelque chose d’excitant sur une chanson de trois minutes.

Max : Est-ce que tu pourrais considérer la possibilité de créer un collectif avec beaucoup de musiciens rock ?

Rob : Oui ça serait amusant, ce serait différent, donc carrément !

Max : Du coup qui prendrais-tu pour composer ce groupe ?

Rob : C’est un projet où c’est mieux d’avoir tous nos amis, donc les gars de Bring me the Horizon, ainsi que tous nos amis de la scène britannique avec qui on a grandi, le groupe You me at Six, essayer de les ramener dans le projet… Biffy Clyro, qui est mon groupe préféré… J’adore le nouvel album de Twenty One Pilots donc leur demander de participer aussi. Il y a aussi Deaf Tones, pourquoi pas Fall Out Boy et de les inclure au groupes parce qu’ils sont assez tournés sur les collaborations comme par exemple avec les gars de Everytime I Die. Pourquoi pas Issues, et qui d’autre… Définitivement avoir Brendon Urie, parce que c’est toujours bon d’avoir du Panic! at the Disco avec soi.

Max : Est-ce qu’il y a une collaboration de prévue pour le prochain album ?

Rob Domiani : On a certaines personnes que j’ai mentionné dans la liste, mais je n’ai pas envie de ruiner la surprise ! On a déjà du contenu prêt qu’on est en train d’arranger, et je veux pas trop en dévoiler mais on a réuni des amis sur une chanson. On a écrit une chanson et on s’est dit qu’il y avait certaines personnes qui seraient parfaites pour la chanson du coup on va les inclure et ils vont tous bientôt enregistrer leurs parties et les introduire dans la chanson pour en faire une joyeuse et parfaite pour faire la fête. Donc quand ça sera prêt, je pense qu’on va pouvoir entendre toutes ces voix et ce sera un travail collaboratif.

Max : Et est-ce que tu as un film préféré ?

Rob : C’est dur de choisir, j’adore les films et en choisir un n’est pas facile mais s’il y avait un film préféré de tous les temps, ce serait The Dark Knight pour les émotions que ça m’a donné quand je l’ai vu pour la première fois au cinéma. Je suis un grand fan de Batman de toute façon, j’adore les comics mais j’aime aussi les thrillers et les films policiers, donc pour moi The Dark Knight c’était ce mélange parfait d’un film de super-héros fantastique dans un environnement de film de gangster qui est bien réel et épique. J’adore aussi les films de gangster et bien sûr il n’y a pas un meilleur méchant que le Joker de Heath Ledger, il est dans au top du top pour moi. Mais s’il y a un film, sans forcément avoir un gentil et un méchant mais un protagoniste et son antagoniste, avec une confrontation excellente des deux personnages, je vais forcément adorer. Christopher Nolan est mon réalisateur préféré et j’ai aimé tous ces films, que ce soit Momento ou Inception.

Max : Très bien. Et pour finir, est-que tu as un jeu vidéo favori ?

Rob : Ici aussi, si je devais en choisir un préféré de tous les temps ce serait Ocarina of Time, parce que c’est juste un classique et il a énormément marqué mon enfance. La première fois que j’y ai joué quand j’étais petit, c’était extraordinaire de voir ce monde incroyable pour la première fois en 3D, et tous les jeux Zelda sont excellents en général. Maintenant je n’ai plus trop le temps de jouer aux jeux les plus récents, et je n’y ai pas beaucoup joué mais Red Dead Redemption 2 est vraiment génial, et puis j’adore tout ce qui est cowboy et le Far West.
